He is not paid for his holidays: the chef takes revenge by filling the restaurant’s kitchen with
cockroaches

Working in the catering industry is not easy: whether in the role of cook or waiter, the pressure is high.
For those behind the stove, however, there is certainly a lot of responsibility, because the success of a
good restaurant also depends above all on the good food served at the table. This is why it is necessary
to treat its employees well and those who do the «dirty work» for a company to be successful. The chef
in this story knows this well, he who felt resentful about his unpaid days off. The response of the young
chief may not have been reasonable, but he certainly took revenge for the wrong he suffered.
When you think of a restaurant kitchen, what comes to mind?

The first concern, in addition to the
quality of the products used, is undoubtedly the hygiene of the place, which must always be impeccable.
Health and food safety inspections are commonplace in bars and restaurants, and if something isn’t
clean or up to standard, the restaurant is in trouble. Tom Williams, the 25-year-old cook of the «Royal
William IV» pub in Lincoln (United Kingdom), has decided to take revenge on his employer by
compromising the hygiene of the pub. After arguing with the owner about the non-payment of the
vacation, the young man decided to release about twenty cockroaches in the kitchen of the
establishment.

As you can imagine the pub had to close temporarily for some time…a closure which cost the pub some
£22,000 (24,500 Euros)Although Tom was right to fight for his paid leave, his impulsive act had such
serious consequences that a lawyer had to be called. Jeremy Janes, the man’s lawyer, attempted to
defend his young client by explaining the background to the situation: «This is a case riddled with bad
decisions. There was a legitimate dispute over furlough pay, but the employee took an inappropriate
route to obtain this money. He needed it to be able to provide for the needs of his son, whom he has
cared for, since he was 23 years old». The judge, at this stage, seems to have given the man a second
chance: and you, would you have forgiven him?
