In some contexts, it is preferable to adopt a sober behavior and a dress code adapted to the
circumstances. For example, in the office, in a place of worship or even at school, it is important to
respect the dress code set by the regulations or, more simply, by the customs which are followed by all
as if they were codified by a rule. The teacher in this story, meanwhile, was certain she always wore
appropriate attire in class, even when she was accused of «going a bit too far» in her choice of clothing.
But let’s take a closer look at what happened.
Christina Smith is an elementary school music teacher and
has been criticized for her «inappropriate» clothes. The young teacher showed up to her TikTok
followers to get an honest opinion on her clothes: a chunky burgundy sweater and a pair of dark
leggings. What was wrong with her outfit? Yet, it appears the administration complained specifically
about the teacher wearing leggings, an item of clothing considered too daring to wear in a classroom.
Her boss asked her if she really thought it was normal to go to work in leggings, and in the caption of her
video, Christina explained that she had been told that she had «gone too far with her outfit».
Still, users lent their support, in disbelief over the leggings controversy: «I can’t believe there are places
that control how adults should dress every day,» one user wrote. «I wear jeans or leggings every day. I’m
still a great teacher!» another person commented, clearly siding with Christina. It’s true that leggings are
very tight and figure flattering, but when used in combination with a nice loose sweater, possibly a bit
