There are things in life that happen for a very specific reason, even if we don’t realize it at the time.
Whether or not you believe in fate, finding an abandoned baby will forever mark you and you will
always think it must have happened to you for a very specific reason. In August 2000, Danny Stewart is
hurrying to his partner Pete’s house for dinner when suddenly his eyes are caught by the sight of a «doll»
on the New York subway. The «doll», however, was moving and Danny soon realized he had found a
newborn baby on his city’s subway! After moments of panic, the man knew what to do and today he can
tell this story with a smile, because this baby has become his son!
Danny could not believe his eyes: a
newborn with only a sweatshirt and the umbilical cord still attached had been left on the floor of the
New York subway. Danny started calling for help, trying to get the attention of passers-by, but no one
stopped to listen. A woman who didn’t speak English tried to figure out what was going on but probably
thought she was dealing with a deranged person. Back then, not everyone was walking around with a
cell phone in their pocket and it was much more difficult to contact someone.
Danny then thought of
calling from one of those old payphones; he called the police and the first thing he thought of saying
was, «I found a baby on the subway.»
His heart was pounding, and after waiting several minutes, he thought the police would never believe
him. No agent went there to find out what was going on.
On the other hand, Danny wouldn’t even lift the child, lest he get hurt. He has another idea: he’s going
to call Pete, his partner. Pete would surely believe him. And that’s what he did: «When I got his call, he
told me he had found a baby. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up: I knew Danny was telling the
truth, because he never jokes like that, about these things», recalls Pete Mercurio
