A little girl studies on the street on a cardboard desk while her father cleans cars: she gets a
scholarship

Social media can be an important starting point to promote stories of resistance, hardship and poverty,
in the hope that the greater community behind the screens and keyboards will not remain unmoved by
certain issues. One click won’t solve world poverty, of course, but a small action can help many people.
Little Marìa, for example, is only 7 years old and is forced to study in the street, on a makeshift desk that
her father has made for her out of cardboard. Fortunately, his story did not go unnoticed and the local
community worked to ensure the child’s right to an education and a safer job for his father.
Marìa is a seven-year-old girl who does not give up studying, although she has to accompany her father
to work every morning. As the man sets out to clean the cars on the street in the city of Trujillo (Peru),
the little girl sits on the sidewalk studying as best she can thanks to a desk her father built for her so she
can concentrate and sit comfortably. From seven o’clock in the morning, Marìa is always sitting there, in
the same place, whatever the weather and with the few resources she has. Fortunately, things changed
after a man filmed the little girl’s situation and help was on the way.

It was thanks to the «Trujillo Benevolent Society» that María and her father received the opportunity
they needed: the little girl obtained a scholarship that allowed her to enter school and finally follow a
course official ; the child received all the necessary school materials and even a uniform to wear to
school. While the father got a much better job as a janitor at the school his daughter was assigned to.
A family that had to fight with all its might to survive and has now reached an important milestone
thanks to broad solidarity. We hope that Marìa will be able to continue her studies until the end and
that this will allow her to get a good job to improve her living conditions and those of her family.
