The cost of living is increasing day by day, so much so that many families are forced to make significant
sacrifices. There are those who can’t afford big celebrations on Christmas Day, those who avoid turning
on the oven and heaters, and those who have had to take refuge in their car after a series of
unfortunate events. An elderly couple was spotted and reported to authorities precisely because the
husband and wife could no longer afford the rent. Both had lost their jobs and had been living in their
cars for months without the ability to enjoy a hot meal. Luckily, someone noticed and didn’t turn their
back on them. Two elderly spouses from Copparo (Ferrara, Italy), aged 65 and 70, were spotted in their
car. A scene that no one would want to see, especially in festive times like Christmas at that time.
Someone must have alerted the authorities as a patrol car immediately drove to the couple to find out
their story. The wife and husband had been evicted from their home for at least two months and,
although they were doing quite well, they told authorities they had no roof over their heads and had not
had a hot meal for a very long time. Moved by the unfair situation of this couple, the police decided to
intervene by doing something concrete for the two elderly people. The police therefore took the
husband and wife to eat in a restaurant in the Ferrara area and then offered them a hotel room.
The
hotelier, who learned of the couple’s story, also wanted to contribute by covering the expenses of the
elderly couple. It was not easy for this couple to cope with the situation and to accept the help of the
police, but all this generosity has rekindled in them the hope for a better future. The two had a warm
Christmas and are now awaiting the intervention of social services, which will hopefully be able to help
them concretely to get out of this bad patch.
